1. You need to eat. There’s no need to go crazy counting calories—just stick to appropriate serving sizes and you’ll be on your way. If you really want a benchmark, aim for 1,800 to 2,000 calories daily if you don’t exercise, and up to 2,400 if you do, says Elisa Zied, R.D., New York City author of Feed Your Family Right. If you’re breastfeeding exclusively, you can add another 500 calories to your daily intake.

2. Focus on your hunger cues. Pay attention to how you feel: On a scale of one to ten, if one is “haven’t-eaten-in-days starving” and ten is “stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey,” aim to be around a four when you start a meal and a six when you finish.

3. Watch the clock. Eat something about every three or four hours to keep your blood-sugar and energy levels steady throughout the day.

4. Go slow. Plan to lose only one or two pounds a week, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Losing weight too quickly can impact your milk supply.

Breakfast: cereal with skim milk and fruit

Saturday:
Breakfast: peanut butter and banana sandwich
Snack: fruit smoothie
Lunch: frozen entree
Snack: hummus and veggies
Dinner: rice with beans and veggies
Breakfasts:

Whole-grain cereal with skim milk or low-fat milk and a piece of fruit
Peanut butter and banana “sandwich” made with Kashi Go Lean blueberry waffles
Hard-boiled egg, whole-grain toast, and a piece of fruit
Low-fat yogurt, low-fat granola, and a glass of 100% juice
Morningstar Farms Veggie Sausage Patty sandwich on whole-grain bread with a slice of cheese and fruit or a glass of 100%
Lunches and Dinners:

Salad with prewashed lettuce and veggies, shredded rotisserie chicken, and whole-grain crackers
Wrap sandwich made with Flatout Healthy Grain bread, veggies, and low-sodium cold cuts
Pasta or rice with canned beans, shredded parmesan cheese, veggies
Healthy frozen entrees such as Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, or Amy’s Kitchen
On-the-Go Options:

Wendy’s small chili and baked potato (hold the sour cream)
McDonald’s salad and Fruit ‘n Yogurt parfait
Starbucks Chewy Fruit & Nut Bar and tall Skinny Latte
Panera Bread Low-Fat Vegetarian Black Bean Soup and small fresh-fruit cup
The “kids’ meal” at any fast-food/ convenience restaurant (not perfect, but at least you’re getting smaller portions!)
Snacks:

Homemade trail mix: nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate chips
Low-fat string cheese and a piece of fruit
Smoothie with low-fat yogurt or milk and fresh or frozen fruit
Prepared hummus and veggies for dipping
Low-fat graham crackers and peanut butter
